Why Lettuce is Important

The humane society’s guidelines for feeding your guinea pig recommend a daily serving of fresh produce for your pet, and lettuce is one of the recommended staples.
Lettuce is good for your guinea pig for the same reason it’s good for you. It’s stock-full of vitamins such as Vitamin B, Vitamin C, and Vitamin D.
It is also a great source of vital minerals such as calcium and zinc. Offering a daily serving of lettuce helps prevent nutritional deficiencies, and, as a bonus, guinea pigs love to eat lettuce!
What Type of Lettuce is Best?
You will want to pick lettuce that you would like to eat. It should be fresh and unspoiled. Avoid serving frozen fruit or vegetables to your guinea pig. Frozen fruit and vegetables are lower in nutritional content than fresh produce. For the same reasons, tinned or canned produce is not a suitable choice, either.
While most lettuce varieties are good for your pet, not all are created equal. Some, like Romaine lettuce, are an excellent selection because of the high nutrient content. Others, like butter lettuce, are lower in nutrients but a documented favorite of guinea pigs. Meanwhile, Iceberg Lettuce should be avoided at all costs.
You will want to pick lettuces and leafy greens that are dark green, such as Romaine lettuce, Leaf lettuce, and spinach. Remember to remove uneaten lettuce from your guinea pig’s enclosure before it spoils!
Romaine Lettuce
Romaine lettuce is an excellent choice for guinea pigs. The dark green color indicates that it is dense in nutrients and minerals necessary for guinea pig health. As with anything, too much of a good thing is bad. Because of its calcium content, feeding too much can be detrimental to the health of your guinea pig. Limit your pet’s serving of Romaine lettuce to between five to seven servings a week.
Green and Red Leaf Lettuce
Like Romaine, Green and Red Leaf lettuces are especially healthy for your pet. For the same reasons that Romaine is a great choice, Green and Red Leaf lettuces are good because of their nutritional value. Green Leaf is more nutritious than Red Leaf, though both are great options. As with Romaine lettuce, avoid feeding in excess.
Butter Lettuce
If you’ve ever had a salad composed of Butter lettuce, then you’ll understand why guinea pigs love to chow down on these leaves! They have an interesting soft, buttery texture your pet will love. However, Butter Lettuce is not as nutritionally dense as Romaine, Green Leaf, or Red Leaf lettuce. Because of this, Butter lettuce should be offered in moderation or as an occasional treat.
Iceberg Lettuce
As mentioned earlier in this article, Iceberg lettuce is a no go for guinea pigs!
Iceberg is pale green, meaning that it is low in nutrients. It is composed of mostly water and fiber. While that is great for your diet, the same is not true for guinea pigs.
It is better to feed your guinea pig lettuce that is dense in nutrients. The large surface area of the Iceberg lettuce leaves means that pesticides and other toxins can get trapped on the lettuce even after a good washing.
Iceberg lettuce has also been reported to cause stomach upset and runny stool for guinea pigs. With so many other great options for your pet, it’s best to avoid Iceberg!
What Other Leafy Greens Can Guinea Pigs Eat?
While you’re in the lettuce section of the grocery store, pick up some healthy leafy greens! Variety will help keep your pet interested in its food, as well as help prevent nutritional deficiencies.

It is important to thoroughly wash all produce before offering it as a treat to remove pesticides and other toxic elements.
While variety is important, be sure to slowly introduce new foods to your guinea pig. Introduce new food in small amounts and slowly increment the serving over time. This will help prevent stomach upset for your guinea pig.
If you notice your pet has loose stool, reduce the serving or stop offering that item altogether. Call your vet if the stool does not return to normal after a few days. There might be something else going on!
